Ohio Buckeye Blitz
Wheelchair Rugby Annual Report
The Ohio Buckeye Blitz Wheelchair Rugby team had a busy 2008-2009 season traveling to tournaments, hosting two tournaments in central Ohio and working annual fundraisers for the upcoming 2009-2010 season. Every October the Buckeye Blitz travels west to Indianapolis for the Fawl Brawl to kick off the rugby season, the Indy Brawlers hold an annual 8 team tournament with teams from all over the Midwest, one team traveling up from Texas. Although we didn’t win as many games as we had wanted, it was a turn-up for the long season to come; the Buckeye Blitz finished the tournament 1-4 and came in 7th place. Working hard every weekend practicing every Sunday from 10:30 to 2:00, the Blitz were looking forward to heading to Slippery Rock University in November for the annual Steel City Slam. The 6th Annual Steel City Slam brings teams from the east coast, Philly, D.C., Pittsburgh, Ontario, Canada, from the Midwest Indy traveled over, as well as Michigan. The Blitz would have tough tournament ahead of them coming in as the 8th seed. The Blitz dropped the first game loosing to Philly, but would fight back for with an upset victory over the #5 seed, Pittsburgh Black team. Sunday would bring two games, both games the Blitz lost, one to Pittsburgh Gold team 36-33 and the last game would drop to the D.C. Punishers 40-38. Although the record didn’t show, the Blitz had a good tournament with great strides and played some competitive rugby all weekend. Brett Harbage, one of the Buckeye Blitz, veteran players came away with All-Tournament Team honors as, Best Picker. The rest of November the Blitz geared up for their home tournament, the 7th Annual Columbus Collision that was held at Ohio State Universities RPAC, a premier recreational facility. This annual tournament is always a god one because the Buckeye Blitz split into two teams to allow for more playing time for developing players. The tournament would draw teams from the state up North (Michigan), Kentucky, Indy, Minnesota, Texas, and Pittsburgh. Michigan would draw the number 1 seed followed by Minnesota, Texas, Kentucky, Indy, Blitz I, Blitz II and Pittsburgh would grab the final seed. Saturday brought some good action as Blitz I got two wins, beating Pittsburgh 52-32 and beating Blitz II 45-25. The team from Kentucky looked good leading into Sunday upsetting Minnesota and Texas to setup a championship game of Kentucky and Michigan. Blitz II played well against Indy only loosing by 3, but Blitz II play a great game to upset Pittsburgh, it was a great game for the developing Ohio players. The Ohio Buckeye Blitz won the bid to host the Heartland North Regional Tournament for the second straight year, the event would be held in Columbus at a Columbus Recreation and Parks facility. This tournament is to see what teams would make from the Heartland North Regions and get a chance to play in the Sectional Tournament in March. The Buckeye Blitz would earn the 5th and final slot to get to Sectional posting wins over Chicago and Milwaukee. The tournament was a great success and a big thanks to Columbus Recreation and Parks for the facility and providing needed transportation for the tournament. The Sectional tournament would be held in Saginaw, Michigan in March, The Sectional would bring teams from the top 5 teams from the Heartland North and the top 3 teams from the South Region. This would be a challenging tournament for the Blitz due to all the heavy hitters and the stiff competition. The top four teams from this tournament advance to play in the National Championship held in Louisville. The Blitz would finish 7th, beating Pittsburgh, Lakeshore would finish first followed by Kentucky, Michigan and Minnesota, which would all advance to play for the National Championship. That would wrap up the Ohio Buckeye Blitz playing season, it was a step in the right direction as we beat teams we hadn’t in the past and played more competitive with others. Thanks to all our sponsors and people who volunteer during the season to make it a great year of rugby. Unfortunately, the season runs directly into our fundraising efforts to raise funds needed for next season’s travel, equipment expenses, hotels, new equipment and tournament fees and expenses for hosting two tournaments in Ohio. The Blitz raise needed funds a variety of different ways, we like to gain exposure to our sport by having Pay to Plays, were friends and family members, as well as sponsors come in for a small fee to play against our team. The Ohio University Physical Therapy Department holds an annual Pay to Play, Four Play for Rugby to raise funds for our team. This is great annual fundraiser for us and them, it allows the PT students to get involved with rugby while still in school and to organize an event to help possible future patients of theirs. We follow this fundraiser up with a local Pay to Play in Columbus, this will be the 4th year having the annual event, it is great to see our friends and families trying to play rugby against the Buckeye Blitz, it is not as easy as it looks! Every year the rugby team gets involved with Columbus Parks and Recreation’s Friends of Therapeutic to volunteer at Red, White and Boom, depending on the number of volunteers we get to participate, they give us funds for the upcoming rugby season. One of our biggest fundraisers is our annual golf outing, this year is our 3rd Annual Outing, the outing is sponsored by Magnum Heating and Cooling. Magnum Heating and Cooling help us organize the event, get sponsorships and donation, as well as bring many golfers to the outing. This has been a steady and profitable fundraising event for our team. Our Fundraising efforts end in September at the 63rd Annual Millersport Sweet Corn Festival where we cook pork chops and serve pop and water, this will be our best fundraising event in a year or two, as we almost tripled our profit from just a year ago. All the fundraisers we do are to cover expenses throughout our rugby season, to help cover travel and equipment expenses. Thanks to all our sponsors, especially Buckeye PVA and to all the volunteers that make our season a success. Report Prepared By: Brett Harbage
